March 21-23 - Eckert Crane Days, Fruitgrowers Reservoir

Every spring hundreds of thousands of gracefully-curved, long-legged, red-capped sandhill cranes make their way from winter range in the southern US and Mexico to summer breeding grounds in the northern states. With decent weather and a little luck, we are able to catch up with the cranes right here in our Western Slope backyard during a few weeks in March and April. Fruitgrowers Reservoir in Eckert is a favorite stopover for the sandhills, arriving or departing in groups of several hundred or even thousand.

This year, the BCRLT Field Club will be joining local crane enthusiasts, Black Canyon Audobon Society and Colorado Parks and Wildlife for the 12th annual Crane Days in Eckert. Here's a snapshot of events happening over the weekend:

Friday March 21

  • 1:00 pm - Local "craneiac" Evelyn Horn will give a presentation about sandhill cranes at the Eckert Presbyterian Church.  Alecia Phillips, BCRLT Acting Executive Director will chime in for a few minutes to discuss BCRLT's habitat conservation efforts in the area. The talk will be followed by a pie and coffee social.
  • 3:00 - 5:00 pm - Join BCRLT for an afternoon picnic and crane viewing at Fruitgrowers Reservoir. Bring a dish or drink to share and binoculars if you have them.

Saturday March 22

  • 9:00 am - 11:00 am - Crane viewing at Fruitgrowers Reservoir with Black Canyon Audobon, Colorado Parks and Wildlife and Black Canyon Regional Land Trust

More about the Black Canyon Field Club

The Black Canyon Field Club is a social outdoors activities club open to the public, coordinated by BCRLT. Outings are hosted by staff, board members and landowners, and take place primarily on private lands that have been permanently conserved in partnership with the land trust. Some events take place at public conservation areas such as state parks or wilderness areas. The Black Canyon Field Club is fun and educational in nature, intended to give participants an opportunity to learn about and enjoy private lands they wouldn't otherwise have access to. Hosts happily share their knowledge of the land through casual discussion, touching on the history and early homesteaders of the area, ecology, wildlife, unique attributes and conservation values. Check out the upcoming events listed below and join us for a great time in the great outdoors!
