BCRLT Comments on 30,000 acre Oil and Gas Lease Proposal
Feb 08, 2012

On February 9, 2012 Black Canyon Regional Land Trust submitted comments pertaining to the 30,000 acre oil and gas lease proposal in the North Fork Valley. Bureau of Land Management began excepting public comments in December as part of the NEPA scoping process, and final submissions were due today by midnight.
Adjacent to a large portion of the land up for lease are private estates which BCRLT holds conservation easements on. Landowners and local organizations expressed great concern over the proposed lease sale, as the North Fork Valley is historically known for its high quality agricultural production. The impending lease sale has the ability to change the dynamic of the valley indefinitely. Over the past few months, meetings were held in Crawford, Hotchkiss, and Paonia that drew an overwhelming response of disapproval. BCRLT staff once again began the task of drafting comments that expressed concerns of our landowners and partners in the North Fork area.
Below are links to BCRLT’s comments, in addition to maps which depict our conservation easements in reference to proposed leased property locations, and also both active and inactive wells in the area. With the interests and conservation values of our landowners at stake, rest assured BCRLT will be involved with this proposition until a comprise between all parties can be reached. Contact the BCRLT office with your questions, concerns, or comments.
